Imagine mapping hidden lava tubes in the remote Mojave Desert, exploring twisted tunnels hidden beneath a medieval castle, or tracking elusive tiger sharks in the murky depths of the ocean. These are just a few ways science is using autonomous robots to aid in discovering more about the world around us. In conditions and spaces where humans cannot travel, these robots blaze the way, pitting their code against treacherous environments in order to complete their missions. In this camp, students will learn the basics of how to craft code for robots. They will begin with the groundwork of robotics code using the simulated robot Pico bot. An overview of different robotics sensors is next as students solve line-following mazes and other challenges with VEX IQ robots. Finally, students will design a bot that will navigate their own tricky maze of “lava tubes” to deliver a research payload to a target point. Students will be challenged to gain a better understanding of robotics and coding as they go where no robot has gone before!
